BREAKING NEWS: Cambodia Firmly Rejects Thailand's Allegations Over Mine Incident, Calls for Adherence to Ceasefire Agreement
Phnom Penh, August 12, 2025 — In an official statement issued today, Lieutenant General Maly Socheata, Under Secretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of National Defence of Cambodia, strongly refuted recent allegations made by Thailand. These allegations pertain to the injuries sustained by a Thai soldier due to a mine explosion at the Tamone Thom Temple area on August 12, 2025.
The Ministry firmly dismisses any accusations from the Thai side, characterizing them as lacking substantial evidence. The incident took place at the Tamone Thom Temple area in Banteay Ampil district, Uddor Meanchey province, Cambodia. Cambodia's position remains clear: it has never used, nor will it employ, new landmines. As a proud state party to the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention since 1999, Cambodia's demining efforts have received international commendation.
To date, no official or transparent investigation has been conducted to uncover the facts surrounding this incident. Cambodia has consistently advised Thailand that unexploded remnants of war still exist in these areas. Thus, all involved parties are urged to refrain from public statements that may lead to misunderstandings, escalating tension or confrontation.
Cambodia remains steadfast in its commitment to the Ceasefire Agreement, established on July 28, 2025, and the recent 13-point Agreed Minutes during the extraordinary Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) meeting on August 7, 2025. This meeting was observed by representatives from Malaysia, the United States of America, and the People’s Republic of China. Cambodia calls on Thailand to honor all terms of the ceasefire and agreements made during the GBC meeting, including the cessation of troop movements, as agreed upon when the ceasefire was enacted.
Cambodia appeals to Thailand to adhere to the spirit of the ceasefire agreement, promoting a resolution acceptable to both parties through upcoming meetings of the Regional Border Committee (RBC) and the GBC. The comprehensive implementation of the ceasefire agreement is expected to foster a favorable environment for peace, stability, and normalcy in bilateral relations. This objective reflects not only the aspirations of both nations but also those of the international community, evidenced by widespread international support for the ceasefire accord.
Cambodia is committed to working constructively and in good faith with Thailand, regional partners such as Malaysia, the United States of America, and the People’s Republic of China, as well as fellow ASEAN member states. The objective is to ensure the full and effective implementation of the ceasefire while resolving disputes peacefully, in accordance with international law, the UN Charter, and the ASEAN Charter.
